报告题目(Title) : Optical Sensing and Instrumentation Technologies for Food Safety and Quality Inspection

报告摘要(Abstract) : The objective of this seminar is to present optical sensing and instrumentation technologies developed at Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) of United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) for food safety and quality applications. Emphasis will be put on the development of spectral imaging-based techniques that target the reduction of food safety risks during postharvest production and food processing. Topics will include comprehensive safety and quality inspection for online processing of fresh fruits and vegetables using hyperspectral reflectance and fluorescence imaging techniques, authentication of food ingredients and detection of food contaminants using Raman chemical imaging and spectroscopy techniques, and improvement of cleaning and sanitation efficacies in food processing facilities using handheld imaging devices. The current states of the above spectral imaging technologies will also be presented.

报告人简介(Biography) : Jianwei Qin received his BS and MS degrees in Measuring and Control Technology and Instruments from Tianjin University in China in 2000 and 2003, respectively, and his PhD degree in Biosystems Engineering from Michigan State University in USA in 2007. He is currently an agricultural engineer in Environmental Microbial and Food Safety Laboratory (EMFSL) of United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) in Beltsville, Maryland, USA. His research is primarily focused on developing novel optical sensing and instrumentation technologies for food safety and quality inspection. His current research interests include Raman spectroscopy and imaging, high-speed hyperspectral imaging, machine vision and image processing, artificial intelligence algorithm development, and food safety engineering. He is the holder of one United States patent and the author or co-author of five book chapters, more than 80 refereed journal articles, and more than 70 conference proceeding papers. He was the recipient of four PhD student awards from Michigan State University (2004, 2006, 2007(2)), an PhD student research award (2006) from American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), two PhD student paper awards (2006 and 2007) from Association of Overseas Chinese Agricultural Biological and Food Engineers (AOCABFE), two ASABE superior journal paper awards (2012 and 2015), and an ASABE Information Technology, Sensors, & Control Systems (ITSC) meeting paper award (2016). He served as chair for ASABE ITSC machine vision committee from 2014 to 2015. He was an expert panel member of United States Pharmacopeia (USP)’s milk product authentication committee from 2012 to 2017.
