Photosynthesis is the source of food and energy for our life. With the predicted population growth, expected food shortage, and global warming, it is essential to increase crop yield, which is dependent on photosynthetic reactions. A difficulty in agricultural internet-of-things is to control plant growth, which makes modeling photosynthesis very important. In this presentation, history, mechanisms, and modeling of photosynthesis will be introduced.
Professor Govindjee (who uses one name only) was born in India in 1932; he obtained his PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He served UIUC as Assistant Professor (1961-1965), Associate Professor (1965-1969), and as Professor (1965-1999), retiring in 1999. Since then, he has been Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Plant Biology, at UIUC. Govindjee is best known for his in-depth research on excitation energy transfer, light emission, primary photochemistry, and electron transfer in photosynthesis of plants, algae and cyanobacteria. He has published more than 500 research papers in prestigious journals including Science and the PNAS. He is Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Fellow and lifetime member of the National Academy of Sciences (India); President of the American Society for Photobiology (1980–1981). He has studied photosynthesis for 60 years and is very loyal to his research. Even at 86, he is very active in doing research and kind in helping other young scientists.
